Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise has reportedly expressed significant frustration with the level of protection he receives from referees in the Bundesliga. According to reports from the French sports newspaper L’Equipe, Olise feels opponents have at times defended too aggressively against him, with officials not acting consistently enough, a sentiment he voiced directly to a referee during a recent match.
Olise’s Frustration and Confrontations
The 24-year-old Frenchman’s grievances became public during Bayern’s 0-0 draw against FC Schalke 04. TV cameras captured Olise confronting referee Robert Schröder after a challenge involving three Schalke players. His protest was so vehement that teammate Harry Kane intervened, pulling Olise away to prevent a potential yellow card for dissent. During this exchange, Olise reportedly urged Schröder to address Schalke’s physical approach, stating, “You have to be more consistent, otherwise I’ll end up getting massacred. You can’t just stand there and do nothing about the behaviour of their defenders. You can’t let everything go – that can’t happen,” as reported by Goal.com. L’Equipe further suggests Olise has felt let down by officials on multiple occasions recently, leading to direct exchanges in several matches, not just against Schalke. OneFootball also highlighted his “increasingly aggrieved” stance regarding aggressive challenges and “insufficient protection from referees” in the Bundesliga, noting he has approached referees in six matches this season asking for stricter action.
“Mr. Nonchalant” Breaks Character
This outspoken reaction is considered unusual for Olise, who typically maintains a reserved demeanour off the pitch, earning him the nickname “Mr. Nonchalant.” This term describes a laid-back individual who often appears emotionless, particularly in interviews. Goal.com recounted an instance following a 5-0 Champions League victory over Bodö/Glimt, where Olise’s terse and seemingly meaningless answers reportedly pushed DAZN reporter Jochen Strutzky “to the brink of despair.”
Club Support for Olise
Despite the mixed reactions to his detached interview style, Olise has largely received support for his recent appearances, including from within Bayern Munich. Head coach Vincent Kompany and board member for sport Max Eberl have publicly defended him. Eberl stated, “Michael Olise is someone who wants to play football. And everything around it leaves him rather cold… For us, the most important thing is that he shows what he can do on the pitch. And he does that brilliantly.” Kompany added, “Sponsors simply want people to talk about him. And when Michael is there, people talk about the sponsors. Where we have to be honest: Michael’s manner has no bad value for any sponsor and for any journalist. None at all. And everyone enjoys it.” Olise is scheduled to play next for Bayern against Union Berlin on Friday.
